Miss Kitty was no longer a potential rape victim of leering bad guys. Gunsmoke’s story lines softened when it was moved in 1961 from its late Saturday night time slot to early Monday or Tuesday nights. Actually, I love the scenes where all we do is, as Jim says, ’eyeball it.‴ ″We let people let their imagination do what they want them to do. ″We keep it very subtle,″ she said in a 1962 interview. ![]() There was a love interest between the red-haired Kitty Russell character and Arness’ Marshal Dillon, but the writers kept it off screen. ″She was very talented and a real joy for me to work with.″ The show’s original cast starred Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, Dennis Weaver as his limping deputy, Chester Goode, Milburn Stone as ″Doc″ Adams and Miss Blake as Kitty Russell, the throaty-voiced owner of the Long Branch. Set in the lawless cattle town of Dodge City, Kan., in the late 1800s, ″Gunsmoke″ was one of television’s original ″adult westerns″ - more violent, saltier and sexier than the cowboy fare offered young viewers in the mid-1950s. The show lasted one more season on CBS, then was canceled. Miss Blake left ″Gunsmoke″ in 1974 after 19 years. In 1984, the Cancer Society gave her its annual Courage Award, which was presented in the Oval Office by President Reagan. The actress had surgery for oral cancer in 1977, and later appeared throughout the country for two years on behalf of the American Cancer Society.
